Common dangers for children during the school year

With school back in full swing, you may be breathing a sigh of relief as a parent. You are following a routine again and can put your focus on daily activities with the assurance that your children are furthering their education.

But knowledge is not the only thing your kids can obtain from school. They can also receive injuries while on or near campus. What are the common ways children get into accidents during the Georgia school year?

Slips, trips and falls

Although most rainfall happens in winter and early spring, precipitation is present all year round in Atlanta. This wet weather makes for wet surfaces inside and outside the school, leading to slips and falls. Spilled liquids in the cafeteria, classrooms and restrooms also contribute to accidents. Likewise, student possessions in hallways and aisles can result in tripping and falling.

Sports accidents

Sports are often the highlight of school for many students, but they are also risky to participate in. Common injuries include concussions and other traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, strains and sprains. Accidents can occur even if your child is not in a sport because these can happen in physical education classes as well.

Fights

School can be very emotionally difficult for children regardless of age. Bullying is common and can even escalate to physical contact. Fist fights and hazing not only lead to disciplinary action but can also land your child in the ER.

Motor vehicle accidents

Traffic in school zones can result in vehicles striking students walking or riding their bikes to and from school. For high schoolers, new drivers pose a risk. You may want to rethink letting your teen carpool with other minors behind the wheel. Driver inexperience, teen passengers, after-school driving and low seat belt use are all factors in motor vehicle accidents, which is the greatest source of fatalities for teens, shares the CDC.
