Steps to take after a staged car accident

Some scammers will attempt to pull off a staged car accident. This is where the scammer lures an unsuspecting victim into a traffic collision to make it appear as though the victim holds the most liability. A common example is the T-bone accident, which occurs when the scammer waits for your car to go through an intersection, hits the gas pedal and collides with your vehicle. The scammer, as well as a few phony witnesses, will claim you ran the stop sign even though you drove safely.

Your first line of defense is to always remain vigilant of scammers to avoid any phony accidents. It will help immensely if you have a dashboard camera in your car because video evidence will prove the other driver is at fault. However, you should follow the same basic steps as in any other collision.

See a medical professional

You will naturally feel angry if you know you a scammer tried to pull one over on you. However, the best thing after any accident is to remain calm. Use your phone to contact an ambulance to take you to the hospital. Some injuries remain hidden after a car crash, and you want to know precisely how the collision harmed you.

Contact the police

Even though the scammers will make it sound as though you were at fault, you still want to have the police involved. They will file an official report, and you can provide your side of the story.

Record all details

Go through the same motions as though the collision was a genuine accident. Take pictures of the other vehicle. Swap insurance information with the other driver. This evidence all comes in handy when you submit your claim to your auto insurance company.

Hire an attorney

Get a lawyer on board as soon as possible when you believe fraud is present. It may be tough to convince the police or your insurance agent it was a staged accident, but an attorney will have your back.
