Do you know how to spot a distracted driver?

Spotting a distracted driver is easier said than done, as you never know what someone else is doing in his or her vehicle. Even if you assume that someone is paying attention to the road, you don't know what is going through his or her mind.

Knowing how to spot a distracted driver is of utmost importance, as this can help you avoid an accident that has the potential to cause serious injury or even death.

Here are some of the many signs that a person is distracted while behind the wheel:

  • They are using headphones. In many cases, this means the person is listening to something other than what's going on around them. As a result, it can distract them to the point of making a mistake.
  • Inability to stay within the lane lines. This is a telltale sign that a person is not paying attention to the road ahead.
  • Sudden braking. This often means the driver is not watching the road, thus causing him or her to brake suddenly to avoid trouble.
  • Long pause before pulling away from a traffic light or stop sign. If someone isn't watching the light, for example, he or she may not pull away right away.

These are some of the many ways you can spot a distracted driver. If you have reason to believe a person is distracted, keep your distance as to lessen the chance of a crash.

In the event of an accident with a distracted driver, move to safety, call 911 and let police take over. In the near future, you can learn more about holding this person responsible for his or her actions.
