How to protect yourself from unsafe working conditions

Regardless of your job, you hope that you're never faced with unsafe working conditions. If you are, you realize that you could be injured or become ill at some point in the future.

If you have any reason to believe that your working environment is unsafe, there are several steps you can take.

First and foremost, don't hesitate to discuss your concerns with your supervisor. Upon doing so, you may find that he or she is just as concerned as you. As long as this person takes immediate action, the problem can be taken care of.

If you don't get any satisfaction by speaking with your employer, it's time to notify the federal or state Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This is a difficult step to take, as you may not want to get your employer in trouble, but if it's for your safety it's something you need to do.

Last, but certainly not least, if you're in imminent danger of being injured, you have the right to refuse to work. This may not go over well with your employer, but your safety and well being should always come first.

There are many steps you can take to protect yourself from unsafe working conditions. When you do this, you'll feel better about your well being as well as that of your coworkers.

In the event that you're injured on the job, don't hesitate to seek medical attention. From there, you can learn more about your rights, such as the ability to receive workers' compensation benefits or file a lawsuit.
