Need For An E-Scooter Accident Attorney Rises Along With Increase In Riders
When e-scooters started rolling on our streets, they appeared to be an experiment in human mobility. They are a great option for people looking to avoid traffic and have become more than a fad. Unfortunately, safety has also become an issue for people who choose to ride them and for people and everyone in their vicinity.
Over 38 million people ride e-scooters annually in the U.S. With more of them on the street, the number of e-scooter riders being hit by vehicles and hitting and injuring pedestrians has gone up too. If you were in an accident, call the e-scooter accident attorney at The Goldman Firm.
Study Finds E-Scooters Are Becoming A Source Of Injuries
You know there are issues when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sees an injury trend and investigates. The CDC conducted a three-month study of shared-scooter injuries in Austin, Texas. The study revealed that there were 192 injuries that required emergency room visits.
Eighty of the injuries were serious. Out of which 45 percent were head injuries, 27 percent were upper body fractures and 12 percent were lower body fractures. It estimated that about 20 riders are injured for every 100,000 scooter trips.
According to studies, some common causes of e-scooter accidents include:
- Falling off
- Brake failure
- Not wearing a helmet
- Underage riders
- Impaired riders
Common injuries from e-scooter accidents include:
- Bone fractures
- Head injuries
Consequences Of Traumatic Injuries Can Be Devastating
There have been at least eight e-scooter-related deaths in the U.S., and three in Atlanta. This demonstrates how dangerous e-scooters can be. E-scooter-related deaths in Atlanta included two riders who were hit by vehicles and a rider who fell underneath a bus.
There have been scooter-related fatalities in other cities as well, which included a child who was hit after falling off an e-scooter he was riding with his mother; a man who lost control while riding and hit a tree; a man who was hit while riding in the dark; and a man who was struck by an SUV while riding.
