Wearing a helmet can save you in a motorcycle crash

A mixed bag

A report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, or GHSA, showed that in 2017, almost 5,000 motorcycle riders died in crashes, representing 300 fewer fatalities than there were in 2016. While this is encouraging news, the flip side reveals that motorcycle fatalities still occur 28 times more often than passenger vehicle deaths.

Older riders

The popularity of motorcycle riding has mushroomed among older riders. Consequently, motorcyclists over the age of 40 now represent the majority of crash fatalities across the country. In 2016, the average age of riders who died in crashes nationally was 43. However, there is also an increase in riders aged 60 and older. If they survive a crash, their injuries are usually more severe than they would have been at a younger age.

Wearing protective gear

Innovations in protective gear for motorcyclists include everything from vests with air bags to the latest in safety technology for boots. However, the best item in terms of protection is the motorcycle helmet. The report from GHSA stated that if the motorcycle riders killed in crashes in 2016 had worn helmets, 800 or more lives may have been saved.

The law in Georgia

Many states are implementing laws aimed at increasing safety for motorcyclists. For example, the state of Georgia requires riders to wear protective headgear. The Georgia Secretary of State approves any helmet that meets the latest Department of Transportation standards.
