3 signs of a drunk driver

Drunk drivers put everyone else's lives at risk. Driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol can make it impossible to safely operate or control a vehicle.

You may not always be able to prevent a collision with a drunk driver, but you could decrease your risk if you know what to look for. Spotting drunk drivers on the road could help you avoid them and call the police...before an accident happens.

1. Drifting between lanes

According to the Insurance Information Institute, failure to stay in the proper lane is one of the most common causes of car accidents. It accounted for 7.5% of fatal crashes in 2016. Failure to stay in the correct lane is a common sign of drunk driving. Driving between the lines while under the influence of alcohol can become more difficult due to blurred vision or dizziness. If you see a driver drifting in and out of a lane or hitting the rumble strip on the side of the road, keep your distance and report a possible drunk driver to 911.

2. Driving too fast or too slowly

Maintaining a steady speed can be difficult for a drunk driver. The driver may not have full control over his or her pedal foot, resulting in excessive speeding. A driver could also be paranoid about getting pulled over, so he or she may drive too slowly. Any kind of reckless driving behaviors could point to a drunk driver, including speeding, running red lights and tailgating.

3. Falling asleep behind the wheel

Alcohol and drugs can make some people drowsy. Trying to drive under the influence could lead to dozing off behind the wheel - especially at red lights and stop signs. If you notice a driver falling asleep in the car next to you, move a safe distance away and notify the authorities of possible DUI. Signs of drunk or drowsy driving can include drifting, stopping abruptly and pausing too long at lights and stop signs.
