What’s the best way to avoid texting and driving?

If you have a cellphone, there’s a good chance you text on a regular basis. While this is a great way to communicate with friends, family and co-workers, you shouldn’t do so when operating a motor vehicle.

As tempting as it may be to text and drive, you must understand the dangers of doing so. Even if you only take your eyes off the road for one second, it can result in a serious accident.

Here are three simple steps you can follow to avoid texting and driving:

  • Put your phone out of sight: When your phone is out of reach, such as in your glove box or trunk, you never have to worry about using it.
  • Use an app: There are a variety of apps you can use to block incoming calls and texts. This ensures that you’re never tempted to answer a call or text when driving.
  • Be careful when using a map on your phone: If you’re using your phone as a navigation device, mount it on your windshield or dashboard for easy viewing.

Taking these steps reduces the likelihood of causing an accident. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do anything in regard to stopping other drivers from texting.

If a negligent driver strikes your vehicle, move to safety and call 911. While waiting for police and paramedics, check yourself for injuries and administer first aid.

Once you receive treatment, review the police report and collect evidence associated with the accident. Doing these things will help you when filing an insurance claim and seeking compensation for your injuries and damage to your vehicle.
