It doesn’t matter if you’re visiting a grocery store, shopping mall, home improvement store or some other type of retail location, safety should always be your No. 1 priority.

Unfortunately, there are many types of shopping accidents that can cause serious injury or even death. These four are among the most common:

  • Slip and fall: This can result from wet floors, faulty elevators and poor lighting among other conditions
  • Shopping carts: They appear harmless enough, but shopping cart accidents can cause serious injuries, especially if a child is involved.
  • Overcrowding: If a store becomes overcrowded, such as during the holiday shopping season, the risk of trampling and other dangerous situations is more likely.
  • Parking lots: You assume that the only risk in a parking lot is moving vehicles, but this isn’t true. There are a variety of defects, such as cracks and potholes, which increase the likelihood of an accident.

If you’re injured in any type of shopping accident, call 911 and wait for help to arrive. If possible, collect evidence from the scene, such as photos of the defect that caused your accident.

Once you receive treatment, you can revisit the details of the accident with the idea of holding the negligent party responsible. As you learn more about your legal rights, you may come to find that there are many ways to obtain compensation for your injuries and related damages.

No one expects to suffer a shopping accident injury, but you never know what will happen when you visit a local store. If you find yourself injured, don’t attempt to “walk it off.” Immediate medical treatment is a must.
