A spokesperson with the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department announced on March 2 that a 26-year-old tree trimmer lost his life while on the job that Saturday. He noted that the Guatemala native apparently died after becoming entangled in both electrical wires and a chainsaw rope while trimming a tree behind a home located on Pleasant Forest Drive.

Homeowners who reside at nearby homes first became aware of what had happened when they saw several of the deceased worker’s colleagues running around the neighborhood frantically trying to summons anyone who could help. He even saw one of Perez G. Tree Services employees attempt to climb the tree to rescue their co-worker.

Once firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the worker suspended upside down some 50 feet above the ground. He had what appeared to be his chainsaw’s rope wrapped around his neck.

The man was so high up in the tree that the fire captain ended up having to call in a tactical rescue team to bring in much longer ladders. Firefighters worked feverishly to try to knock down countless tree branches that obstructed them from getting to the worker. By the time that they finally got to where they could free him, he’d already passed away.

The homeowner who watched the rescue process unfold noted that it was long and tedious. He said that he also heard from firefighters that part of the tree might have fallen on the worker in the moments before he became entangled by the rope and wires. An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Although many Georgia employers are aware of the dangers associated with tree trimming and other professions, they often fail to take the necessary steps to make their workers safe. They frequently hire unskilled workers and provide them with little or no training. They also fail to provide them with adequate safety gear.
