With so many forms of reckless driving, it's imperative to understand the rules of the road and the steps you can take to follow them. If you break the law, even if it doesn't appear to be a big deal, it could cause a serious accident that results in injury or death.
Here are some of the most common forms of reckless driving:
- Speeding. The speed limit is posted for everyone to see, and it's important to abide by it, as well as pay attention to traffic and road conditions.
- Tailgating. Driving too closely to another vehicle is dangerous, as you don't have enough time to stop in the event of an emergency.
- Running a red light or stop sign. There are times when a driver does this on purpose. There are also times when they do so because they're not paying attention, often because they're distracted.
- Illegal passing. There is a right and wrong way to pass another vehicle. For example, on the interstate, you should only pass in the left lane. On a two-lane highway, it's illegal to cross over a solid line.
All of these forms of reckless driving are every bit as scary as they sound. If you continually break the law, you increase the risk of causing an accident.
Even if you're following the rules of the road, you may come across someone who isn't. If another driver causes a crash, move to safety and call for help. You need to receive immediate medical attention for your injuries. Only then can you contact your insurance company and formulate a plan for holding the reckless driver responsible for their actions.
