Got a motorcycle for Christmas? Follow these safety tips

Did you get a motorcycle for the holidays? Maybe your special someone went all-out with a gift. Perhaps you just decided to treat yourself to what you have always wanted. Whatever the reason, riding a motorcycle for the first time is an exciting experience.

There are some things you should know about riding your motorcycle safety. The road can be a dangerous and unpredictable place when you are on a small vehicle that does not have adequate protection. Here are some guidelines for being safe as you share the road with passenger cars, trucks and commercial vehicles.

Be more defensive than you are in a car

You may be comfortable about driving a car. While you should always practice defensive driving, you need to be extra cautious on a bike. When you are starting out, you should ride like everyone and everything is going to hit you. A lot of motorists are not looking for motorcyclists. Remember that motorists deal with distractions and may even be negligent or aggressive. The stakes are higher on a motorcycle.

Wear the proper gear

Do not make the mistake of taking your new bike for a spin in your jeans and T-shirt. These materials will not protect you if you crash-even if you suffer a minor tip-over. Get motorcycle apparel made from leather or Kevlar. Also, do not forget the most crucial element-a DOT-approved helmet.

Limit your rides in inclement weather

You may want to take your motorcycle out every day, but be mindful of what you can handle. If it is raining, hailing or snowing outside, it may be best to wait for another day. It takes a lot of experience to know how to ride in bad weather conditions. Do not let yourself get too confident. Wet conditions can not only affect the traction of your bike, but your visibility too.
