There is nothing worse than the thought of finding yourself behind the wheel with your eyes slowing beginning to close. If this happens, it’s critical that you pull to safety and get some rest as soon as possible.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to combat drowsy driving. Above all else, do your best to get enough sleep before you take the wheel. A solid seven or eight hours will put your mind in a good place.
Here are some other things you can do:
- Stop along your route for a nap, especially if you are taking a long road trip
- Switch driving responsibilities with another passenger, as to give you time to rest
- Don’t be in a hurry, as this helps you understand the importance of taking breaks
- Never drink and drive, as alcohol will enhance your drowsiness
- Stay off the road between the hours of 12 a.m. and 6 a.m., if possible
- Drink plenty of caffeine, as it can help keep you alert
There is no guarantee that doing these things will help you entirely combat drowsy driving, but they are definitely worth a try. Also, don’t forget that other people on the road may not be in the best condition to drive.
If a drowsy driver strikes your vehicle, pull to safety, call for help and wait for the arriving officer to takeover the scene. Also, don’t hesitate to receive medical treatment.
