A Warner Robins school bus driver has been arrested and charged with both reckless driving and vehicular homicide on Thursday, Feb. 22 related to a school bus crash that occurred on Jan. 29.
According to police, the 29-year-old Houston County woman was operating her school bus as she drove downhill along Forest Park Drive near North Pleasant Hill that afternoon at around 4:15 p.m. She was carrying 35 students at the time from Parkwood to Pearl Stephens Elementary School.
Despite the posted speed limit only being 25, investigators contend that she neglected to slow down as the bus navigated a left curve in the road.
It’s because of this that her bus traveled 15 to 20 feet right and ran off the road. The abrupt movements caused the bus to roll over. It ultimately landed on one side. Somewhere along the line, a 6-year-old girl, who’d been riding on the bus at the time, was ejected from the bus.
Emergency crews arriving at the crash scene quickly transported the girl, who was a first-grader at Parkwood Elementary School, to Medical Center, Navicent Heath. She succumbed to her injuries by the following morning. Five other kids on the bus also suffered injuries.
A spokesperson for the Houston County school system had said that they’re still investigating the incident themselves and that they don’t comment on pending litigation.
As for the girl’s parents, they’ve yet to file a lawsuit against anyone. They note that their main focus is making sure justice is served for their daughter’s death.
