Knowing how to drive in fog is critical to your safety

Driving in fog can be a big challenge, as you won’t have as much visibility as you would like. Even if you do your best to avoid this, you never know when you’ll find yourself in dense fog with no way out but to keep driving.

In this case, here are a few tips you can follow:

  • Slow down. You may be in a hurry to reach your destination, but you need to back off the accelerator. Now is not the time to drive fast.
  • Don’t use your high beams. You may assume that your high beams will provide greater visibility, but the reflection actually makes it more difficult to see.
  • Use fog lights. Not all vehicles have these, but if yours does, you should see if they help. It’s worth a try.
  • Never stop on the road. Other drivers are navigating through the fog as well. If you stop on the road, you’re increasing the chance of someone else striking your vehicle.
  • Move to the right side of the road. By doing this, as opposed to hugging the center line, you leave yourself more space.

These are the types of steps you can take if you find yourself driving in thick fog.

As you’re doing your part in keeping safe, watch out for other drivers. Some people won’t slow down, even if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

If you’re part of an accident with a negligent driver, get your vehicle off the road (if possible), call 911, focus on your health and then learn more about your legal rights.
