What are the most common types of driving distractions?

At this point, most drivers realize that they need to avoid distractions at all costs. They understand that this can cause an accident that results in serious injury or even death.

Despite this knowledge, it's not always easy to avoid distractions. Here are the 10 most common types of driving distractions:

  • General distractions, such as daydreaming or thinking about something else
  • Cellphone use, including but not limited to texting and talking
  • Outside event, object or person, such as looking at an accident on the side of the road
  • Talking to other people in the car
  • Reaching for a device or object in the car, such as something under a seat
  • Drinking or eating
  • Adjusting climate or radio controls
  • Using other devices in the car, such as GPS systems or power seats
  • Moving an object, such as a toy for a child
  • Smoking related activities

As you can see, many things can distract you when you're behind the wheel. Even if you do your best to avoid these distractions, you never know when you'll let one creep into your vehicle. If this happens, your chance of being part of an accident goes through the roof.

Just as you could fall prey to a driving distraction, the same holds true for other people on the road. This can also lead to an accident.

If a distracted driver strikes your vehicle, move to safety and call for help. Once it's clear as to what caused the accident, you can then learn more about your legal rights and devise a strategy for seeking compensation.
