Personal strategies for preventing distracted driving

No matter how hard you try, there will be times when you find yourself distracted while you're behind the wheel. This is never a good thing, as taking your eyes and attention away from the road can lead to a serious accident.

Fortunately, there are many personal strategies you can implement for preventing distracted driving. Here are just a few of the ideas you should consider:

  • Let your passengers know that you need to focus 100 percent of your attention on the road, meaning you won't be able to talk to them
  • Don't eat or drink when driving
  • Never use your cellphone when driving, unless it's for an emergency
  • Store all loose items in a secure place, as you don't want to find yourself grabbing for any of these when driving
  • If you need to do something else, pull your car to the side of the road
  • Never take on any personal grooming tasks, such as applying makeup, when you're driving

These are the types of personal strategies that can go a long way in helping you prevent a distracted driving accident.

While you're doing whatever you can to avoid trouble on the road, other drivers may not be taking the same approach to safety. Instead, another person could become consumed in a distraction that increases the chance of a crash.

If you're involved in an accident with a distracted driver, you shouldn't wait to call 911. Upon arriving, police can create a report and an ambulance can provide you with transportation to a local hospital.

Once you're feeling up to it, it's a good idea to learn more about the crash and your legal rights.
