Who is most at risk for drowsy driving?

As you can imagine, being 100 percent alert when you are behind the wheel is of utmost importance. Without this, the chance of an accident is much greater.

Some people are more at risk for drowsy driving than others, including these groups:

  • Young men, often as the result of their lifestyle and personal choices
  • Shift workers, especially those who change from daylight to night shift often
  • Business travelers
  • Those who don't get enough sleep before hitting the road
  • People who have an untreated sleep disorder
  • Anyone who drinks alcohol before driving

These are just a few categories of people who are most at risk for drowsy driving.

For example, as a business traveler, you may find yourself on the road for long periods of time. Additionally, since you're doing your best to make good time, you may not get as much rest as you need.

In some cases, people don't even realize that they are too tired to drive. For instance, you may get a few hours of sleep before hitting the road, which makes you feel good at first. However, the longer you drive the worse things get.

While you can control how much sleep you get, you have no way of knowing what other drivers are doing.

If you are involved in an accident with a drowsy driver, don't do anything that could make things worse. Move to safety, call for help and get all your injuries checked on. From there, you can focus on your legal rights, making an insurance claim and getting your life back together.
