Construction workers, accidents, and workers’ compensation

Anyone who works in the construction industry knows that danger lurks around every corner. This doesn't mean you think about being injured all day long, but you know that something bad could happen at any time. This is why it's so important for everyone to take the proper precautions on the job site.

There are many causes of construction site accidents, including but not limited to:

  • Slip and falls, often the result of debris and tools that are left on the ground
  • Fall from height, such as when a person loses his or her footing on a ladder or scaffolding
  • Power tool accidents, including those involving table saws and nail guns
  • Vehicle accidents, such as those involving a backhoe
  • Explosions and fires, which can result from exposed wiring, flammable chemicals, and other conditions
  • Repetitive motion injuries
  • Lifting injuries

There is no way of knowing if you will face one of these situations in the future. As a construction worker, there is no shortage of safety hazards that could cause you trouble.

If you suffer an on the job injury, don't wait to call for help. You may need to call 911 if you are unable to transport yourself to the hospital.

While it's not always possible, do your best to immediately report the accident and your injuries to your employer.

Once you do all this, work with your medical team to devise a treatment strategy. If you are unable to return to work in the near future, it may be time to learn more about the workers' compensation system and the benefits you can receive.
