What are the primary causes of warehouse accidents?

If you work in a warehouse setting, you know that danger lurks around every corner. You may even have been part of an accident in the past.

As a warehouse worker, it's important that you do whatever you can to avoid an accident that causes injury. While this may be your goal, it's easier said than done.

One of the best things you can do is become familiar with the primary causes of warehouse accidents. Here is a list to remember at all times:

  • Forklifts. These vehicles are used in almost every warehouse setting and are responsible for nearly 100,000 injuries every year.
  • Hazardous materials. Depending on the type of warehouse, it's possible that workers could come in close contact with hazardous materials, such as those that are dangerous if inhaled.
  • Slips and falls. There are many causes of slip-and-fall accidents in a warehouse setting, such as debris or the improper use of flooring products.
  • Falls from heights. Although most warehouse workers work at ground level, this is not always the case. For example, a person may attempt to climb a rack to reach a product for processing.

Knowing the primary causes of warehouse accidents is a good way to avoid trouble. Unfortunately, this knowledge is no guarantee that you will never be involved in an accident.

If you are part of a warehouse accident in which you are injured, receive immediate medical attention. Also, make sure you report the accident and your injuries to your employer. This will put you in position to receive workers' compensation benefits should you be unable to return to work.
