Top tips for driving in a traffic jam

Depending on where you live and work, there is a good chance that you spend some time in traffic jams every day of the week.

While there is nothing fun about sitting in a traffic jam, here’s something to remember: You need to pay attention to what’s going on around you at all times. Neglecting to do so will increase the likelihood of an accident.

Here are some top tips for driving in a traffic jam:

  • Pick a lane and stay in it. Swerving in and out of traffic is only going to make things worse on you and other drivers. It also increases the chance of causing an accident.
  • Watch for distracted drivers. When sitting in a traffic jam, many people turn to their cellphone to pass the time. This means they are not paying attention to the road.
  • Watch the traffic around you. For example, don’t speed up just because traffic begins to move a bit. Instead, slowly build your speed until you are sure that the jam has cleared.

While these tips will help keep you safe in the event of a traffic jam, there are other things you can also do to avoid trouble.

Unfortunately, even if you follow these tips, other drivers may not. This means that you could be involved in an accident even if you are doing everything the right way.

If this happens, move your car to safety and call for help. Once the police and an ambulance arrive, you’ll feel better about the situation.

After receiving medical treatment, you can then turn your attention to the accident and your legal rights.
